About Tana Digi-Farm
This Digi-farm is a product of the “Inter-Religious Cooperation for Economic Empowerment and Peace building project in Tana River County, Kenya. The project is a partnership supported by the Islamic Relief –Netherlands and the Mensen Met Een Missie (MM). The project is being implemented by Islamic Relief Worldwide-Kenya and Kenya Community Support Centre (KECOSCE). The goal of this project is to contribute to increased tolerance, cohesion and improved livelihoods among poor communities. The project is working to increase leadership and participation of religious leaders, youths and women in interfaith peace building processes at sub-county and county levels and to increase economic and livelihoods opportunities for ‘at-risk’ youth and vulnerable women.
Tana River County is one of the forty seven (47) counties in the Republic of Kenya. The County takes its name from River Tana which is the longest river in Kenya. It is a County in the former Coast Province, Kenya with an area of 35,375.8 square kilometers (13,658.7 sq mi) and a population of 262,684 according to the 2012 census. The administrative headquarter of the county is Hola. The County has three sub counties; Bura, Galole and Garsen.
The Tana River is a resource rich county with major water resource in the area. The expansive delta created by the river is characterized by wetlands, presenting great potential for agriculture. The water is used for irrigation of the produce.
The main crops in the project area include maize, rice, mangoes (an important cash crop) and bananas. Other crops include cassava, green grams, beans, peas, melons, cowpeas, papaws, tomatoes, kales, onions, cabbages and some sugar cane.
This Digi-farm is therefore targeted at improving the economic wellbeing of the community and anything you purchase will go along way in lifting the poor people of Tana River from poverty and enable them to enjoy peace and dignity as citizens of our great country Kenya.
